102798  |  GERMANY. Saxony. Reformation silver Medal. Issued 1817 for the 300th anniversary of the Reformation in Dresden on October 31 (22mm, 2.93 g, 12h). Possibly by Johann Veit (or Rudolph) Stadelmann.

MARTIN LUTHER around Eye of Providence; all within radiant border // IUBELFEIER / NEUSTADT BEI / DRESDEN / XXXI OCTOBER / MDCCCXVII in five lines; star above. Edge: Reeded.

Whiting 561; Brozatus 1220; Opitz 3144; Merseburger 2499; Belli 2116. PCGS SP-63. Lightly toned, with some brilliance; evidence of an undertype (likely a 1/12 taler of Friedrich August III from Saxony [Albertine], KM 956). A highly intriguing and enchanting example, and only the third observed in the PCGS census—the first being a SP-67 that realized a total of $700 in a Facebook auction (Virtual Coin Show) in June 2022. Also, a very rare instance in which a medal was produced using a recycled coin planchet.

An individual celebrated each century on the anniversaries of the Protestant Reformation which he helped to bring about, Martin Luther is the focus of this small medal issued on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation in Dresden. The fairly spartan design features the All-Seeing Eye (Eye of Providence) on the obverse, with it also displaying evidence of being overstruck upon a 1/12 taler silver minor.
