MI 469/83; Eimer 504. Mint State Details. Rich red-brown surfaces, with some lighter hues around the devices; a few minor spots are noted, as well as some light tooling around the head of Newton, accounting for the designation. Compare to the Galst specimen, a similar example with some issues, that realized a total of $720 in Classical Numismatic Group 118 (13 September 2021), lot 1422.

 

In addition to his contributions to science, mathematics, and philosophy, Isaac Newton also held an important numismatic role as Master of the Mint, being appointed to that position in 1699. Holding this office for the remainder of his life, he effected many improvements in the coinage.
