Mark Jamieson was born in 1950 and grew up in Belfast, studying there at Belfast College of Art and at Portsmouth Polytechnic. Before producing this medal, he had various commissions in graphic arts and also produced numerous sculptural pieces. In The Medal 46, the writeup for this medal mentions that "...his medal of Martin Luther King is Mark Jamieson's first medal. A unique silver version was acquired by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in 2004. Now BAMS is issuing an edition in bronze. The artist writes about his medal and about the American civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King: In August 2003, coming up to the fortieth anniversary of the "I have a dream" speech, I kept hearing those famous recordings. The speech is one of the great icons of our time and I wanted to celebrate the inspirational power of his words, and life."
An icon in the American civil rights movement and known for his nonviolent forms of protest, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize at the age of just 35, becoming the youngest person to ever receive the reward. Just four years later, he would be assassinated at a Memphis motel while on his way to an event.
