The workup for this intriguing medal in the January/February 1992 issue of De Beeldenaar writes about the designer that "...Fons Bemelmans lives and works in Eijsden (South Limburg). He was born in 1938 in Maastricht. There he began his training as a goldsmith and sculptor at the Stadsakademie, which he later continued in Cologne with professors Gries and Treskow, and completed with professor Minguzzi at the Brera Academy in Milan. His work is characterized by a free, imaginative and plastic imagination, usually of figural themes. Sometimes these are derived from classical mythology. In many places in the Netherlands, sculptures and reliefs by his hand can be seen, made on commission or as free work; among others: Prometheus, Nederiandse Bank in Heerien (1974), Icams, Grote Markt in Zwolle (1980), Orpheus, Oude Markt in Venlo (1985), Paard, Gemeentehuis Horst (1988) and Gemeenschap, Gemeentehuis Meerssen (1990)." [translated from the original Dutch].
