Ex David Nicholas Silich Collection, Part II.
Any collector of ancient Judaean coins instantly recognizes the name of Leo Mildenberg on account of his wondrous monograph on the coinage of the Bar Kochba Revolt. Not just the reference on the subject, but also a roadmap of how to conduct a die study for any series of numismatics, this work is inherently indispensable. The medal here was issued on the occasion of Mildenberg's 70th birthday, which also corresponded with his retirement from Bank Leu, the prestigious Zürich-based bank and numismatic firm that conducted countless important auctions with Mildenberg at its helm. This medal, designed from a sitting of its subject the year prior in Ibiza, would not be complete without three very realistic depictions of ancient coins from the Bar Kochba Revolt—an appropriate nod to one of Mildenberg's most important numismatic contributions.
